Infant Girl Clothes: Keyhole Onesie Tutorial
Ah, the keyhole neckline. You know what I’m talking about – that sweet little teardrop-shaped opening right under the chin. It’s a very simple onesie update that can really make it feminine and cute — the things that all infant girl clothes should be!! This tutorial is very easy and does NOT require a sewing machine, so anyone can do it!
You will need:
- plain, prewashed onesie
- fabric pencil or pen
- fabric scissors
- pins (optional, but recommended)
- embroidery needle
- embroidery floss (ex: DMC brand)
- button
To begin, take the plain onesie and draw the outline for the teardrop-shaped neckline that we all know and love. Like so:
Then take your scissors and snip vertically within the teardrop shape.
Now do a few snips out to the sides, especially near the more curvy part — but stay within the line! You may be saying, what is she doing? But bear with me – you’ll see very soon, I promise. If your snips look something like this below, you’ll be fine.
Now fold back those snipped inner-teardrop-fabric pieces. The fold should be on the line you drew initially. Here’s the keyhole taking shape! You could iron this down, but I didn’t. I just used pins to hold the fabric pieces in place. As you can see below, I went a little nuts with the pins.
Now take your needle and floss and sew around the edge of the teardrop. As you sew, make sure you fasten the folded fabric in place. I used a large needle and I could fit all six strands of embroidery floss through it. You don’t really need to use all six strands — however many you want will still look great.
Now add your button at the top. Secure it very well — babies grab at everything you know!
And you’re done!
So sweet and so quick!
