Handmade Baby Clothes: Rosette Onesie Tutorial
Welcome back for Day 13 of the Handmade Baby Clothes month long onesie project. Today’s embellishment gets you in a Valentines mood by adding some flowers! I think they’re technically called “rosettes.” The great thing is that these rosettes are super simple to make (you can even have older children help you if you want), so this embellishment goes really fast!
You will need:
- plain, pre-washed onesie
- thin (~1″) strips of fabric, roughly 18″ long – the longer the strip, the bigger the rosette
- needle and thread
- embroidery hoop (optional, but helpful)
Take one of your strips of fabric. You see mine in the picture below. Like so many of my fabric pieces, they were upcycled from a shirt that was past its prime.
Knot one end of the fabric, like so.
Twist your fabric.
As you twist, wrap around the knot in a circle, making something resembling a flower.
Ahhhh, I see it now!
Use a pin to hold it all in place. Then using your needle and thread sew on the back of the rosette to hold it all together.
Got it?
Now I made 4 more – you can make as many or as few as you wish. Once I figured out my arrangement, I pinned them in place.
I used my embroidery hoop to hold my onesie fabric taught while I sewed on the rosettes. This isn’t necessary, but I found it helpful.
Got them sewn on? You’re done! Your little sweetie is ready for Valentine’s day tomorrow!

Like this but how do you get the rosettes sewn on the onsie. I tried some trim that looked simular to the rosettes but had trouble figuring out how to sew them to the onsies.
