Welcome to day 2 of the Handmade Baby Clothes month-long onesie challenge!  This onesie embellishment is very easy, so let’s get started.

supplies Handmade Baby Clothes: Embellish with a Doily

You will need:

  1. a plain onesie
  2. a doily  (This doily was only a dollar at Michael’s; if you have vintage doilies that you could use to embellish the onesie, that could make this extra-special.)
  3. pins
  4. needle and coordinating thread

The how-to:

Position the doily on the onesie where desired.

Pin.

Secure in place using needle and thread.  (I made a vertical pass down the center and then tacked the edges.)  Don’t pull the doily or the onesie too tight so they will both be able to stretch as needed once they are on the baby.

This probably could be done with machine sewing, but I thought hand was the way to go on this one.  It was a little slow to sew on, but I enjoyed it by watching a movie with my husband while I finished this up.

I didn’t pre-wash the doily.  Doing that would not be a bad idea.  But in case you didn’t, don’t fret.  Even though the care tag on the doily says to hand wash cold, l flipped the onesie inside out and washed it on the gentle cycle.  Both the doily and the onesie turned out just fine.  Yay!

This is adorable. I’m constantly making afghans as baby gifts. How sweet this would be to coordinate with the afghan! Thanks for the idea!
