Handmade Baby Clothes: Criss-Crossed Neckline Onesie
All right, we’ve made it to the Handmade Baby Clothes’ Personalize Your Onesie Month, Day 9. The idea for this onesie embellishment was to change up the neckline and make it a onesie that LOOKS like the side-snap onesies by giving it a criss-crossed neckline. I prefer to call it ‘kimono style.’ You can call it whatever you want.
What you need:
- plain, prewashed onesie
- fabric for trim (mine was approximately 2″ x 16″ in total)
- coordinating thread
- needle to hand-stitch (unless you are smarter than I am, which is probable!!)
- sewing machine
- seam ripper
- iron
- fabric scissors
- fabric marker
So let’s start! First I marked the trajectory of the new neckline and trim with my marker.
I removed the neck binding on the front using my seam ripper. I also used my seam ripper to make a little hole on the side where the dots end. That’s where I will tuck my trim in neatly once I’m finished (not pictured).
With some help from my assistant, I cut my fabric (2″ wide) and ironed it to make bias tape. I used an old knit fabric shirt that was still in good shape to make the trim. It may look similar to the fabric from the reverse appliqued onesie. Hmm… Uncanny.
I trimmed the neckline to make the “V.” I ended up cutting down the rest of my dotted line (not pictured).
Next I pinned my strip (RIGHT side of bias tape to WRONG side of onesie) to the long criss-crossing part, trimmed it to length, and sewed down the line.
The tricky part to this was connecting THIS PART (circled in red below) back together. I actually hand stitched it, because it was faster for me than figuring out how to do it with my machine.
Then I pinned and sewed the short piece on.
Fold over both (and under) both pieces and top stitch to hold them in place.
Tuck in the end and sew up the side. Voila!!
