Cheap Baby Clothes: Handmade, Recycled, and Adorable
Today I found some great pictures of baby clothes made from men’s old shirts. Talk about cheap baby clothes! This is a wonderful way to reuse old fabric. Surely your father, husband, or boyfriend has a shirt or two (or ten) that are just collecting dust. Well, what about transforming it into a great baby outfit? There is more than enough fabric and even better - some of the detailing for the shirt can be used creatively to enhance the outfit. See some examples below for inspiration from Tiddleywinks Customs. They are not only adorable, but these designs save time by reusing what is already in your home. The additional fabric can be found around the house too or with fat quarters or scraps from the fabric store.
In example one, the buttons on the shirt are incorporated into the design of the dress.
Here the pocket is reused on this skirt. The oversized nature of the pocket adds so much charm, and there’s no additional fabric needed! Plus the fabric appears so thin, making it comfortable summer attire.
Here just the tiniest bit of coordinating fabric is used to turn this shirt into a dress.
These pictures cater just to girls (I love the idea of girl’s clothing from men’s shirts!), but this idea could just as easily apply to boy’s clothes. Let the cloth of the shirt dictate the season and/or thegarment.
For example, linen shirts are great for summertime, whereas heavy cotton canvas shirts are super for play clothes (think of the knees of crawling youngin’s) and wintertime. As with the design inspiration above, allow the original construction of the shirt to enhance your design. Evaluate what is interesting or useful about the men’s shirt that could be highlighted in this new garment — embroidery? pattern? buttons? pleats?
