If you’re like me, you hate to buy things that you know you are ultimately going to throw away, especially when you could make something better yourself. Take disposable bibs for example. 36 for $18 at Target? Or even 24 for $6 on Amazon? Call me cheap, but “no, thanks,” says I. So, to remedy that, I present to you the super easy travel bib tutorial!
For the cost of the supplies, you’ll already come out ahead of those disposable bib packs.
You will need:
- Suspender Clips (I purchased mine from Hancock Fabrics for $2.99)
- Grosgrain Ribbon, 1″ wide (or less) by approx. 12″ in length
- Coordinating thread / Sewing Machine
- fabric measuring tape (helpful, but not totally necessary)
First, determine the length the ribbon needs to be to wrap from collar bone to collar bone around the back of the child’s neck. It’s best to measure your child, but my baby was asleep, so I measured the neckline of a current shirt of hers. Whatever your length, added 2.5″ to allow for finishing the raw edges. My measurements were 9″ + 2.5″ = 11.5″
On each end, fold over the raw edge twice and sew in place.
Slip through the loop of the suspender clip, making sure that the stitching that you just did is on the backside of the clip. Sew in place.
I went over this twice for extra strength.
Now repeat with the other side.
And you’ll have this!
Just clip a napkin to it, and you have a bib!
Use it at home (shown with a cloth napkin):
Or even better, stash it in your diaper bag for on the go (using a disposable napkin):
Mmm, chili. And it’s cheap, too. Now we won’t have orange stains on her shirt because Mommy forgot the bib!!
